Hull upgrades are an important part of character advancement. Over the course of play, a ship's hull can go through a total of 6 hull evolutions.
Each hull evolution will give you either an extra device mount or an extra weapons mount and this is determined by your race/class combination. For example, a Progen Warrior ship with the maximum number of hull evolutions will have 6 weapons mounts and 3 device mounts while a Jenquai Explorer will have 6 device mounts and 3 weapons mounts. Hull evolutions can also give ships more cargo space so players can store more items.

You will also notice a change in the physical appearance of your ship. Each hull upgrade will change the way your ship looks to correspond with the physical additions of new mounting points! A ship with all 6 hull evolutions looks quite impressive when placed next to a ship without a single hull upgrade! You will notice a decrease in speed with each hull evolution. This is because the mass of your ship increases as you add more cargo room and mounting points. More importantly, the hull strength doubles EACH TIME you upgrade the ship. Fortunately, there are many types of engines, reactors and devices that will help overcome this slight lose in engine speed.
